Turtles can fly- Bahman Ghobadi

Iranian cinema’s new wave is so talked about, yet this was just second of the Iranian films that I got to watch and I must say, it intrigued me to explore this genre of cinema much more.

The movie- Turtles can Fly is widely acclaimed for political reasons of bringing Kurdish misery to the world. However, the pain of young Agrin who was raped and loathes the child she brought into world at such an early age, the helpless armless brother whose popularising factor is that he can predict, or the need of creating a leader even among 30 families in form of young satellite are universal characters.

The film is set in Kurdistan, border of Iraq and Turkey and has some light moments- like the one where everyone is trying to put an antennae to get TV signal. The shot of a Dish being bought and placed is equally amusing. However the movie haunts you from the first scene where you see footsteps of beautiful Agrin going towards the cliff till the end, where you discover why. The need to know English, saddam’s leg. Red fish, the open market of weapons and a teacher’s attempt to teach science and maths are some of my take aways from the movie.

What will really make you wonder is the excellent acting by the children as the entire movie is based on them. For me the title of turtles can fly is for the Young Agrin who bears the weight of a child clinging to her, a child who was brought into the world after the heinous rape, a child who she hates and tries to kill multiple times. She is the turtle, and she attempts to fly away from all her miseries by going down the cliff.

Bahman Ghobadi is the young acclaimed director for this one.
